With an investment of €10 M€, Extremadura aims to create up to 2,500 jobs with green hydrogen plants by 2030. Decree Law 1/2023 of January 11, has declared of general interest the production of renewable hydrogen in the region from electrolysis (hydrogen is separated from oxygen present in water), allowing to create a favorable environment for the supply and demand of this gas in Extremadura.

It can be used as raw material, for domestic use, fuel or energy carrier and energy storage with application in industrial and transport sectors. The goal is to produce 20% of green hydrogen across Europe by 2030. Some projects in the region are the Talgo train, which would be the first green hydrogen train in Extremadura and Enalter who intends to replace fossil fuels with green hydrogen.
